Airport to scrap 100ml liquid rule in time for Easter

London City Airport is set to become the UK’s first airport to relax the 100ml liquid rule, at the end of this month.

Airport bosses said two more security scanners would be replaced in the next few weeks, meaning every passenger will be able to take up to two litres of liquids through security in their hand luggage.

Passengers will also be able to keep their laptops in their bags.

New computed tomography (CT) scanners, like those used in hospitals, will take high-resolution 3D images of luggage allowing security teams to view bags from every angle and get a more detailed view of the contents.

Current security scanners only produce a 2D image.

Chief Executive Robert Sinclair said: “The good news for anyone planning a holiday or a business trip is that we will be the first mainstream UK airport to offer a fully CT security experience from the end of this month.

“The new lanes will not only cut hassle, but also cut queuing times, which I know passengers will love.”

Major UK airports have been given a deadline of June 2024 to install the 3D scanning technology.

Luton Airport last week confirmed it was installing 12 advanced scanners by 2024 ahead of the Government deadline.
