Kerry Visits Norway: A Journey Along the Coastal Express 🇳🇴

Recently, our Store Manager from the Gloucester store, Kerry, was invited on a trip with tour operator Hurtigruten to explore the hidden treasures of Norway’s coastline and discover some of its most memorable experiences and recommendations.

Travelling with Hurtigruten feels very different to a traditional cruise. These are working ships, used daily to transport passengers, vehicles, and essential supplies between coastal communities. As you sail, you witness everyday Norwegian life unfolding around you, from locals boarding at small ports to goods being delivered to remote villages.

Rather than focusing on large cruise terminals, the Coastal Express route takes you into smaller, lesser-visited destinations that bigger ships simply cannot reach. It offers a unique opportunity to experience Norway as it is truly lived along the coast.

Snowhotel Experience ❄️

Before joining the ship, Kerry visited the incredible Snowhotel – the only ice hotel in the world that remains open all year round. Inside, hand-carved rooms made entirely of snow and ice create a truly unique Arctic experience, alongside warmer Gamme huts for those seeking more comfort.

Guests can also enjoy a range of Arctic activities, including husky safaris 🐕, snowmobiling, and king crab fishing 🦀, making it much more than just an overnight stay.

The Route 🚢

Kerry travelled onboard MS Nordnorge along the famous Coastal Express route, which runs from Bergen to Kirkenes and back again, covering approximately 2,500 miles.

The journey began in Kirkenes, following flights from London Gatwick via Tromsø, with an overnight stay at the Scandic Kirkenes before boarding the ship.

Life On Board 🛳️

MS Nordnorge offers a calm, relaxed atmosphere designed to let the scenery take centre stage. Facilities include three restaurants, a bakery, sauna, gym, and hot tubs on deck, along with a panoramic lounge ideal for taking in uninterrupted coastal views.

There is no traditional entertainment programme or party atmosphere onboard. Instead, the focus is on slowing down, relaxing, and enjoying the ever-changing landscapes.

Cabins range from simple inside rooms to spacious suites, offering options to suit a variety of budgets and preferences.

Excursions 🌄

During the journey, Kerry took part in several excursions, including:

🦅 Sea Eagle Safari – cruising through the Lofoten fjords, spotting sea eagles, and entering the dramatic Trollfjord
🏝️ A Taste of Vesterålen – exploring Harstad, visiting historic sites, scenic island landscapes, and enjoying a ferry crossing with local food
🏔️ The Atlantic Road & Bergtatt Mine – travelling along one of the world’s most famous coastal roads before exploring an underground marble mine, complete with a raft journey across a glowing underground lake

Final Thoughts ✨

Kerry’s journey with Hurtigruten offers a completely different way to experience Norway. It is not about rushing from place to place, but about slowing down and truly taking in the coastline, the communities, and the breathtaking scenery.

A memorable, peaceful, and authentic way to discover the very best of Norway.
